Storytime with J

J’s class has been learning a lot about fairytales and fractured fairytales. During their Writers Workshop time, the kids would write about the heroes and villains they would like to have in their own fairytales. The kids then had the assignment to write a fairytale. Below is The fairytale that J wrote (with a little editing by me). We hope you enjoy it.

The Lost Apprentices

Written and Illustrated by J

Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away, there lived two apprentices. The first one was named J. The second one was named Antony. They loved to do really, really cool things like fighting bad guys. One day they found a portal leading to the Marvel dimension. They got pulled in by a giant scrap robot. The giant scrap robot was controlled by a bad guy called Ultron. They found some super heroes called The Avengers. They only found three Avengers. One was named Iron Man. The second one was named Hulk. The third one was named Captain America. They all were struggling. Then, right there in the sky, they found an Imperial Space Station called the Death Star. The Death Star was trying to invade and destroy the Earth.

They found a squadron of X-Wings. The X-Wings were called there by the apprentices. Then, out of nowhere, they found some U-Wings. On Earth, they were calling out a lot of the ships. They found another bad guy that was named Loki. Loki was helping the Death Star. They saw another portal, and Loki pulled them out of the portal. Then they saw a guy named Firestorm coming out of the portal. Out of nowhere, a guy on a motorcycle named Ghost Rider with a flaming skull and chain came to help Firestorm defeat Loki.

J warns, “we must destroy the Death Star by shooting an Ion torpedo into it! And we have to distract the troopers so they can’t get into their cannons and destroy the X-Wings.”

Out of nowhere, a U-Wing picked them up so they could fly to the Death Star. The U-Wing dropped them off at the tractor beam so they could be sucked into the Death Star. Then, out of nowhere, Darth Vader came. He was a Sith Master. His lightsaber’s color was red. The apprentices charged at him. Then Vader cut Antony’s arm off.

A hero name Doctor Strange came and reversed Antony’s arm injury with a weapon called the Eye of Agamotto. The Eye of Agamotto had a weird item called an Infinity Stone. There are six Infinity Stones. The one that is in the Eye of Agamotto is called the Time Stone. A second one, which is in a hero named Vision’s head, is called the Mind Stone. Doctor Strange used one of his awesome powers and shot Vader in the face.

Then, a bad guy named Thanos destroyed the Eye of Agamotto by smashing it. He flew down to Earth, shooting everyone with time lasers, turning everyone into babies. They ran into a bad guy named Joker. Joker had a weird flower on the side of his chest and it shot pollen. He had a purple jacket, a white striped shirt that was green, and grey boots. His pants were purple. Joker was immediately beaten. And they lived very happy lives.

Full disclosure, I didn’t edit much. I added a few words that he missed here and there. The biggest edit was wherever you see “out of nowhere”, J had originally written “out of the open”. As I said before, we hope you enjoyed J’s little story. Maybe I can convince him to write a new one of these once a month.

So there you have it. This is what this last week’s episode of “The News with J” was supposed to be. I know it’s not the same as watching a six year old deliver the news, but he should be back in action this Saturday morning! We hope you will tune into our YouTube channel to see all the fun J has with his news show!

Star Wars Rebels: Shroud of Darkness

Since the time when Vader and Ahsoka first showed up on Rebels, we have been waiting for that moment when they would face each other. This is not that episode, but the wheels are in motion.

Shroud of Darkness starts off with an amazing Lightsaber duel with Ezra and Kanan taking on the inquisitors. Ezra’s powers and lightsaber skills are growing and he and Kanan are able to fight the inquisitors and escape with their lives. Kanan and Ezra meet back with the Ghost crew with news that they have yet to find the perfect planet for the Rebellion to make a base.

When they return to the Ghost, Ezra finds Ahsoka watching an old Holocron of Anakin teaching some lightsaber techniques. After a brief discussion, Kanan, Ezra, and Ahsoka decide it’s time to take the fight to the inquisitors, but to do so they must speak with Yoda through the force. What happens next? You will just have to watch and find out.

This episode has so much going for it and viewers young and old will go through so many emotions watching it. You may want to keep a box of tissue next to you, as tears may flow. Shrouds of Darkness has raised my level of excitement for the remainder of the season and I can’t wait to see what our Rebels will do next.

Itty Bitty Mask #4

Mask

©Dark Horse Comics

Aliens from the Moon have declared war on Big City. The Mask has already caused problems in Big City by turning a grandmother into a pancake making, cookie baking machine, by turning the zoo animals into artists who made Zoo Con, and started the alien invasion by taking a bite out of the moon as Mayor Mask, can the Mask make up for those mistakes by helping rid the Earth of the Moon aliens? Guess we will find out at 11:00 AM. Side note, J adores anything by Art Baltazar and Franco. I recommend this series and anything else done by the Aw Yeah! Comics crew for your kids.

Arrow Season 2.5 #5

Arrow

Felicity has been captured by Brother Blood’s followers. Sara is in town to help Team Arrow defeat this new incarnation of Brother Blood. If you wanted to know what happened between the season 2 finale and the season 3 premiere, you need to be reading this series!! If your kids are fans of the show, this is a must have for their collection. If they are younger, you should probably read ahead so you can do some “creative reading”.

All New Captain America: Fear Him #2

Cap2

Nomad has been captured by the Scarecrow, most likely to be tortured by the things that he fears the most. Will Cap get to Nomad before it’s too late? This 6 issue series looks like it’s going to be one that is not for the faint of heart. I would say you should skip this one for the smaller kids, but pick it up for yourself.

Thor #5

Thor5

This storyline is so amazing not only did we see a woman take the on the power and name of Thor, but we got to see Thor and the Odinson do battle. I am so excited to see what lies ahead for this new, amazing Thor. PS, J loves this series. You will definitely want to peek through the issues before reading them with your younger kids.

Darth Vader #1

You’ve seen what the Rebels were up to immediately following ‘A New Hope’, now let’s see what the “Baddest Man in the Land” Lord Vader is up to in Darth Vader #1. Also make sure you check out the Skottie Young variant. J is a huge Star Wars fan and even a bigger Vader fan. He is so excited to make our weekly trip to the comicbook shop later today.

May the 4th Be With You

560302_10151003912645312_1987073000_n

Since it’s “official” inception on May 4th 2011 people across the world have celebrated one of sci-fi’s greatest treasures, Star Wars. People hold Star Wars marathons in their homes, discuss why Episodes 1-3 were not as good as 4-6, share their hopes for future episodes (which have now turned into debates on whether Disney/JJ Abrams will ruin or enhance the franchise), people meet at bars for Star Wars pup quizzes, and some people read their favorite Star Wars fan fiction.

Today was the first time that we actually “celebrated” Star Wars day in our home. I love the films but I never thought that they were appropriate for J, until now…well at least A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Return of the Jedi is still probably a little too dark and scary for J to watch, so that one will remain a “daddy movie” for now. We had such a great time today that I thought I would share everything that we did.

Our day started around 7 am with a viewing of A New Hope. J loved every minute of it. Every time R2 and C-3PO would come on screen he would jump up on the couch and say, “LOOK DADDY!!! IT’S R2D2 and C-3PO!!!” He also got really excited over the Obi Wan/Vader lightsaber fight.

Star Wars movies

After A New Hope was over, I immediately started The Empire Strikes Back. J wasn’t as excited for Empire, that is until he saw Yoda. When Yoda came on screen, I saw a big smile go across J’s face. He seemed to love everything about Yoda (technically he’s loved Yoda for a while now, but this was his first time seeing him in the movie).

When Empire finished we took a little Star Wars break. I debated whether showing J Return of the Jedi and eventually decided against it. In my personal opinion, Return of the Jedi is a little too violent and dark for J. I can’t imagine how he would have reacted when ***spoilers***Yoda dies. So instead we watched an episode of WordGirl and Martha Speaks, and then we started a Netflix Star Wars Clone Wars marathon.

During Clone Wars J and I grabbed some squirt guns and pretended that we needed to save Master Yoda from the Emperor, so we strapped his Yoda backpack on in the Star Wars fashion and “shot” our blasters at the multitude of droids attacking us. After our little game, J went down for a nap so I went shopping and did a little yard work.J with Yoda

J woke up about 2 hours later then we got him dressed and headed out to a Star Wars Day art show put together by the Utah Arts Alliance, Urban Arts Gallery, and Salt Lake Comic Con. There were some amazing Star Wars themed art pieces and some special guests from our local 501st Legion.

Art Show1 Art Show 2 Art Show 3

When we got home from the art show J wanted to play in his room, so we decided to start watching Return of the Jedi. About half way through the movie J wanted to come out and hang out with his mommy and me so I turned off the movie and we just hung out for a while. I had to take a call so I went down to my office until it was J’s bedtime.

I didn’t see any other way of ending such an awesome day other than reading J’s new Darth Vader and Son book for bedtime. I would read the little captions on the pages, and J would make up stories about what Darth Vader and little Luke Skywalker were doing.

bedtime reading

Now that J is asleep, I decided to finish Return of the Jedi and will probably watch Family Guy’s Star Wars episodes to end my amazing Star Wars Day. Today was such a blast and I am so excited to make this a little family tradition. Some things may change from year to year (adding the Phineas and Ferb Star Wars episode next year), but this will be just one more thing that I will be looking forward to for the next 364 days. May the 4th be with you always, and be prepared because the Revenge of the 5th is just around the corner.
